FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Holistic Care Questions
WHAT HAPPENS AT MY FIRST SESSION?
We start off the first session with a consultation. I'll ask you questions about the condition or complaint you have. I'll then ask you questions about your general health.
I may look at your tongue and measure your pulse. This can help me to make an accurate diagnosis.
I will make a diagnosis that is individual for you. I will choose acupuncture points based on the diagnosis I have made. The individual diagnosis focuses on the underlying issue rather than the symptom(s) you have. By focusing the underlying problem, the body is treated holistically, and the results will last longer than treating the symptom(s) alone.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY FIRST TREATMENT?
It is a good idea to have a light meal a couple of hours before acupuncture. This can prevent you feeling dizzy or tired after treatment (this is a rare side-effect of acupuncture).
You may choose to wear loose clothing which can be moved to access acupuncture points (most acupuncture points are on the arms and legs). There are gowns available if you don't wear loose clothing.
WHAT HAPPENS IN A FOLLOW-UP APPOINTMENT
At follow-up appointments, before the treatment, we will have a discussion about how you have been since your previous treatment. I may also suggest lifestyle changes based on what we discuss.
ARE THERE ANY SIDE-EFFECTS TO ACUPUNCTURE?
The most appealing thing about acupuncture is that there are relatively few side-effects. Some people may feel tired immediately after the treatment. People often can feel very relaxed.
More rarely, people feel pain at the site of the needle. Remember that acupuncture needles are very thin which is why this side-effect is rare.
DO YOU HELP TREAT TERMINAL OR CHRONIC ILLNESS?
I have significant experience of treating people with terminal and chronic illness. I have worked in the NHS in cancer services (as a radiographer and then as a cancer support specialist) for over 24 years. I have worked with people with chronic conditions like pain and fatigue, as an acupuncturist, for over ten years.
